Porch Deck Rebuild

What started as a small repair request turned into a full porch deck rebuild after an on-site inspection revealed serious hidden damage. During the estimate, a small section of the deck was opened to see what was happening underneath. This simple step showed that the problem was much bigger than it looked on the surface.

Deck rot

The real issue was a failing gutter above the porch. For years, water had been dripping directly onto a main support beam below the deck roof. Wood is not meant to stay wet, and over time the constant moisture caused the beam to rot. Because this beam helped support both the deck and the roof above it, the structure was no longer safe.

To replace the damaged beam, the entire porch had to be carefully taken apart. Deck boards, railings, and floor framing were removed so the load could be safely lifted off the failed beam. Only then could the rotted beam be removed and replaced without risking further damage or collapse.

New deck joists

Instead of rebuilding to the bare minimum, the new structure was made stronger than before. An extra support beam was added, and all floor supports were doubled to reduce movement and improve long-term strength. This created a solid, stable porch that feels firm underfoot and better supports the roof above.

Once the structure was rebuilt, new decking, walls, and railings were installed, and the gutter system was corrected so water now drains away from the porch. The finished result is a safe, durable, and long-lasting covered porch. This project shows how important it is to find the true cause of damage and fix it properly the first time—especially when water is involved.
